"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
Public Classes & Registration
Widely considered to be the gold standard in mindfulness training, this experiential course was developed in the late 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn, an MIT-trained PhD molecular biologist based out of University of Massachusetts Medical School. Over its lifespan, hundreds of studies have been conducted on participants of MBSR, showing positive impacts on symptoms of a wide range of diagnoses, both medical and psychological. Studies have also shown evidence of increased stress hardiness, a greater sense of coherence and resulting self-efficacy and improved overall wellbeing.
Participants learn in this intensive course that regardless of the content of life's challenges, which cannot always be changed, each of us has the innate capacity to respond more effectively to them. By systematically cultivating greater awareness, we can learn a new way of relating to stress, illness, pain and suffering. Mindfulness is an ancient concept found in many cultural and religious traditions, and while it is a foundational principle of Buddhism, it is not inherently religious.
This program is challenging in that it takes a commitment to daily practice and an openness to trying on new ways of being. It can be a transformational experience and can offer many benefits to those who learn how to integrate mindfulness into their lives. You already have the power to be happier, healthier and more resilient. This class reminds you how to access that wisdom.
